This past weekend we hoped to make a short film called A Lighthearted War. It was going to be the first time Sirocco Research Labs left the lab and headed outside into the real world. But, because this is Los Angeles, and it’s winter, we got the rain. And, if there’s anything we’re not gonna do, it’s get wet.
So, the great Martin Morse made some really rad costumes, Kelly shot some beautiful pictures, Adi used cardboard to make some assault rifles, Jaro killed it on lights, Annie painted faces, Lizzy joined in the fun, Jimmy directed and smiled for the camera with Sarah Fang and we made a rainy day turn into a cool photoshoot.

Enjoy, friends. See you soon.

Sometimes you need to make a quick project. This little guy, from idea to finished product, took about 45 minutes. I think it’s a nice reminder to keep afloat when you really want to give up. Sometimes big projects are frightening, but just doing small projects can get your creative juices flowing again and will prepare you for the bigger ones. This week we’ll be working on our next short movie. It involves stop motion and ninja girls… we’re all really excited. Keep up the little projects when big ones are daunting.

Intern #001

Name: Forrest Kahlil Perrine

Age: 23

Location: Los Angeles, California

Prior Location: The Vanilla Dome; Bellingham, Washington

Objective: Somewhere between life experience and logical conclusion, perhaps both.

Latest experiment in the research labs: Film shutter speeds and documentation of subject on skateboard.

Creatively most envious of: Charles Burnett

Enjoys terribly: Fauvism, and documenting projects that were built with his hands.

Conclusive Report: Forrest is intern 001 for one month in Los Angeles. A list of preferred women are Suzanne Sontag, Yayoi Kusama, Samira Makhmalbaf and Hannah Hoch. A list of preferred men are Carl Sagan, Charles Burnett, Dan Savage, Erik Satie, and John Baldessari. Favorite medium is currently collage. Lastly, given a $100 budget, he would create a film of himself consuming $100 worth of Twinkies or an 18-year-long choose-your-own-adventure film about a father who is a spy in the Appalachian mountains.

After careful observation and studies of naturally occuring Volcanos, I have come to the perfect conclusion on how to create, without failure, smoking volcanoes for movie magic.

With these illustrations, you will observe how to create volcanos which will smoke. Unlike the elementary way of creating an oozing volcano, using baking soda and vinegar, these will not leave a mess on your miniature underwater movie set.

1. From cardboard, cut out 3/4 of a circle. Create fold lines by slightly scoring the surface every five inches.

2. Assemble a quite geometric volcano by taping the two sides onto each other. Using plaster or joint compound, cover surface of volcano until it looks legitimate. Crevices, cracks, and pock marks are all key to success. After allowing a few days to dry, apply desired finish, paint, or sand.

3. Using your laboratories supplies, place beakers into the volcanos. Fill the beakers with luke-warm water. Using scientific gloves and safety goggles, break off small pieces of dry ice, with extreme caution, and place into beakers.

4. The chemical reaction which is now taking place is the carbon dioxide sublimating into a gas.

5. For a movie magic glow, place flame colored lights under volcano and watch the scientific fun begin!
