• Photoshoot: A Lighthearted War

  
  This past week­end we hoped to make a short film called A Light­hearted War. It was going to be the first time Sirocco Research Labs left the lab and headed out­side into the real world. But, because this is Los Ange­les, and it’s win­ter, we got the rain. And, if there’s any­thing we’re not gonna do, it’s get wet.
  So, the great Mar­tin Morse made some really rad cos­tumes, Kelly shot some beau­ti­ful pic­tures, Adi used card­board to make some assault rifles, Jaro killed it on lights, Annie painted faces, Lizzy joined in the fun, Jimmy directed and smiled for the cam­era with Sarah Fang and we made a rainy day turn into a cool photoshoot.

• keeping afloat

  Some­times you need to make a quick project. This lit­tle guy, from idea to fin­ished prod­uct, took about 45 min­utes. I think it’s a nice reminder to keep afloat when you really want to give up. Some­times big projects are fright­en­ing, but just doing small projects can get your cre­ative juices flow­ing again and will pre­pare you for the big­ger ones. This week we’ll be work­ing on our next short movie. It involves stop motion and ninja girls… we’re all really excited. Keep up the lit­tle projects when big ones are daunting.

  Con­clu­sive Report: For­rest is intern 001 for one month in Los Ange­les.  A list of pre­ferred women are Suzanne Son­tag, Yayoi Kusama, Samira Makhmal­baf and Han­nah Hoch.  A list of pre­ferred men are Carl Sagan, Charles Bur­nett, Dan Sav­age, Erik Satie, and John Baldessari. Favorite medium is cur­rently col­lage. Lastly, given a $100 bud­get, he would cre­ate a film of him­self con­sum­ing $100 worth of Twinkies or an 18-year-long choose-your-own-adventure film about a father who is a spy in the Appalachian mountains.

• Making Volcanos

  

  After care­ful obser­va­tion and stud­ies of nat­u­rally occur­ing Vol­canos, I have come to the per­fect con­clu­sion on how to cre­ate, with­out fail­ure, smok­ing vol­ca­noes for movie magic.

  With these illus­tra­tions, you will observe how to cre­ate vol­canos which will smoke. Unlike the ele­men­tary way of cre­at­ing an ooz­ing vol­cano, using bak­ing soda and vine­gar, these will not leave a mess on your minia­ture under­wa­ter movie set.

  1. From card­board, cut out 3/4 of a cir­cle. Cre­ate fold lines by slightly scor­ing the sur­face every five inches.

  2. Assem­ble a quite geo­met­ric vol­cano by tap­ing the two sides onto each other. Using plas­ter or joint com­pound, cover sur­face of vol­cano until it looks legit­i­mate. Crevices, cracks, and pock marks are all key to suc­cess. After allow­ing a few days to dry, apply desired fin­ish, paint, or sand.

  3. Using your lab­o­ra­to­ries sup­plies, place beakers into the vol­canos. Fill the beakers with luke-warm water. Using sci­en­tific gloves and safety gog­gles, break off small pieces of dry ice, with extreme cau­tion, and place into beakers.

  4. The chem­i­cal reac­tion which is now tak­ing place is the car­bon diox­ide sub­li­mat­ing into a gas.

  5. For a movie magic glow, place flame col­ored lights under vol­cano and watch the sci­en­tific fun begin!
